When a patient becomes part of the Psycamore program, families and significant others often find themselves searching for ways to support their loved ones in treatment and seeking methods of building healthier interpersonal relationships with one another. Our family and couples therapy sessions offer the opportunity to do just that. Therapy with loved ones enables each individual to examine their part in the family or romantic dynamic, as well as identify ways to reduce strain and enact lasting change that improves the overall relationship. Strengthening bonds among a family unit or couple is an incredibly effective way of creating a healthier, more cohesive home life for everyone involved.
Family Therapy at Psycamore
Our family therapy program involves all members of the family unit, even if not everyone attends each session. In the adolescent and child treatment programs at Psycamore, family therapy may consist of appointments with parents alone, parents and the patient, or with other children or significant adults in the family system.
Please note that Psycamore offers this service as part of an Intensive Outpatient Therapy program. It is not a stand alone service. You will receive this therapy as part of your program should your therapist deem it necessary.
Goals of Family Therapy
The overall goal of family therapy at Psycamore is to improve interactions and strengthen relationships among family members. Family therapy is a powerful tool that has proven effective at helping families create stronger bonds with each other while also recognizing individual needs within the group. Therapy as a family provides opportunities for individuals to express themselves openly without fear of judgment or criticism from other members. Through family therapy, families learn how to better understand one another, resolve conflict, communicate effectively, and create healthier relationships.
What to Expect in Family Therapy
During family therapy sessions at Psycamore, our licensed therapists guide parents and their children through activities that help them express their feelings, thoughts, and experiences in a safe environment. Parents, children, and teens are provided specific tools they can use to manage stress, anxiety, depression, anger, or other difficult emotions that may be causing strain within the family dynamic. Therapy sessions help the family become aware of their patterns and behaviors to encourage beneficial changes in how they interact with one another. It also provides opportunities to identify areas where certain members may need additional support or guidance.
Couples Therapy at Psycamore
In our adult program at Psycamore, couples therapy is designed to modify the interaction of husband and wife or two persons in a serious relationship who are in conflict with each other. The issues a couple may need to address in couples therapy may be social, emotional, sexual, or financial.
Goals of Couples Therapy
Couples therapy aims to assist two people in an intimate relationship better understand each other, identify issues that need to be addressed, and learn conflict resolution skills. Both partners learn how to communicate more effectively to create a healthier dynamic in their relationship. The goal of these sessions is to help the couple build trust and respect, restore affection, and increase intimacy so they can enjoy a more satisfying relationship.
What to Expect in Couples Therapy
The therapist establishes a therapeutic contract with a patient couple and through changes in communication patterns, attempts to alter maladaptive patterns of behavior and encourage personality growth and development. At Psycamore, if couples therapy is needed, these sessions are typically provided by the same therapist who provides individual therapy. If this is not agreeable to the couple, a different therapist may be assigned.
