Understanding Anxiety

When addressing any mental health concern, it’s helpful to understand a little (or a lot) about it! So, what is anxiety? Anxiety is a natural response to stress and perceived threats. While anxiety can present differently for everyone, some common symptoms you may feel are excessive worry, restlessness, or fear. Any of these factors may contribute to or lead to anxiety attacks. You may also feel physical symptoms such as shallow and rapid breathing, sweating, racing heart, or tightness in your chest. Your symptoms may interfere with your daily life, causing you to avoid social situations, be reactive to various triggers, or result in troubles at work or in your personal life, to name a few.

Anxiety Self-Management Techniques

Anxiety treatment at home can help and you may prefer to find anxiety treatment without medication, so our Psycamore therapists are here to share some anxiety management techniques that you can do on your own.

Mindfulness & meditation: These are methods that can help ground you in the present moment and stop your mind from spinning out of control. There are a plethora of apps and videos available for free that can help you cope with anxiety.

Deep breathing & yoga: Deep breathing and practicing yoga can help calm your nervous system and control the physical responses to anxiety. Deep breathing is an especially helpful treatment for anxiety attacks.

Exercise: Getting your endorphins flowing is a natural way to lift your mood. Walking, running, playing a sport, riding a bike, hiking, or any other exercise are great ways to reduce anxiety.

Clean & healthy eating: Eating a well-balanced diet and limiting caffeine and sugar which can exacerbate anxiety are also good ways to reduce the symptoms of anxiety. It’s also best to avoid alcohol and substances as they often increase anxiety.

Sleep: Sleep is a restorative time for mind and body, and a lack of sleep perpetuates anxiety, so getting 7-9 hours of sleep a night is a great strategy for reducing anxiety.
