Group therapy sessions are an important part of Psycamore’s mental health program and treatment. Group therapy is an effective and widely embraced form of therapy that can be an incredibly enriching and insightful experience, spurring growth and healing on a deep level. Sharing experiences, knowing you’re not in this alone, and feeling supported by others who are facing similar concerns can accomplish much more than individual therapy alone. Yet sharing with others can also be scary. Knowing what to expect may help ease any anxieties you may have about the process.

How Does Group Therapy Work?

If you’re considering group therapy, or have had group sessions suggested as a part of your treatment program, you may be wondering what to expect in a group therapy session. The procedures and format of group therapy sessions can vary greatly, depending primarily on the purpose and type of group. With that said, what you can generally expect is as follows.

Initial Group Therapy Session

The first session (or perhaps first several meetings) may include an overview of the group’s purpose, guidelines and expectations, confidentiality, general procedures, and other pertinent information, as well as introductions of group members and the facilitator or therapist.

Welcome & Check-In

After the initial introductory session, sessions will typically begin with a welcome by the therapist or facilitator and a check-in with group members. The check-in is where members can share what they are feeling and how their life has been since the last session. It may be general, based on a specific question, or even a review of a homework assignment. In many cases, sharing is voluntary.

Session & Closure

Depending on the type and purpose of the group, usually a specific activity, topic, or goal is then introduced as the focus for the session that day and the group participates. Usually, at the end of a session, the facilitator will summarize the main content and allow time for members to share their thoughts and feelings about the session. Many therapists like to end with a sense of closure and encouragement for future growth. Some may assign homework or practice for the group members to complete by the next session.
