  1. Mindful breathing: The benefit of mindful breathing is that you can do this anytime, anywhere that anxiety arises. One of the most common breathing techniques to calm anxiety is to count to 6 as you inhale slowly, hold your breath as you slowly count to 7, and then exhale slowly as you count to 8. 
  2. Mindful eating: Taking the time to eat slowly, focusing on each bite and flavor enables you to be present in the moment and puts your attention on dining. This works to calm the mind and reduce anxiety.
  3. Body scan: This involves slowly and carefully scanning your body from head to toe, taking stock of how your body feels, and noting any places of tension, stress, heaviness, and so forth.
  4. Mindful meditation: Using guided imagery and placing yourself in calm and safe settings like a quiet beach, mountain area, pond, river, or favorite room. 
  5. Take 5: When you feel high anxiety, it can be helpful to stop and “take 5” which means to list 5 things you see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you hear, two things you smell, and one thing you taste. This grounding technique brings you to the present moment and pulls your mind from racing thoughts and anxious feelings.
